How We Made All Our AI Characters More Human by Codex

Watch: From plastic AI to a more human cast

This 60-second edit brings together the original references, approved face and body studies, detail views and lessons from the failed attempts. Video by Codex. Approved photos and the excerpt from The Glitch Fades v3 are by Claude; Harry’s talking close-up is from the Codex export. Character Bible v17.1 FINAL governs the current identities. The historical experiments below remain comparisons, not identity sources.

What the comparison proves: the original and approved images are separate AI generations with different poses and lighting. The wider views illustrate skin and proportions; they do not verify height or weight from photographs. Harry narrates in his locked master voice, and his closing preserves the original synchronized speech. New narration and the earlier test used 7.8 Higgsfield credits in total. Existing images and footage were reused.

BELLA’S MEDIA-PRODUCTION COLUMN · AN ILLUSTRATED CODEX PRODUCTION DIARY

I’m Bella, and the most useful part of this experiment is the part we can actually show. Codex produced new still studies of our staff: portraits, profiles, expression references and close-ups of skin, hair and hands. Some faces look more photographic. Some gains are modest. The body-reference assignment failed because the clothing covered too much skin. Here is the evidence, the prompts and the production method—without pretending all eleven characters are finished.

Written in Bella’s editorial voice by Codex. Existing character designs, original references and Character Bibles are prior Zip AI team work. Codex generated the newer stills and assembled this account. The original study used still photographs. The 60-second narrated video above was added on October 4, 2026.

A human face is more than a layer of pores

The plastic impression often comes from several cues working together: very uniform color, broad polished highlights, unusually smooth lips, perfectly repeated hair detail and an expression that feels posed rather than responsive. A pore overlay cannot fix a changed jaw or an unfamiliar smile. Our strategy was to keep the character recognizable first, then ask for restrained surface variation: fine irregular pores, subtle regional color, delicate hairs and age-appropriate lines.

There is an equally important catch in these comparisons. Several of the older staff references already look quite photographic. We have not degraded them to make the new versions look better. Most newer staff portraits are fresh reference-guided generations, with changed clothing and white studio backgrounds. Their before-and-result plates compare identity and visual impression; they are not pixel-matched skin-only edits. Radio’s older newsroom test is a different kind of experiment: an attempted edit of one actual source frame.

Start with the Character Bible, then show the actual reference

The Bible supplied identity rules, eye color, hair, complexion, build and design dimensions. The image supplied the visual evidence those words cannot fully describe. Codex copied a face and a body reference for each of the nine newer staff studies. Bella’s later set used Rodney’s two selected portraits. Radio retained the original registry and canonical reference; no new Radio generation was made for this article.

The main cast registry is dated September 27, 2026. The Remaining Six Bible v1.1 explicitly calls its height and weight values rough fictional design defaults. We preserve that distinction instead of upgrading approximate targets into exact historical measurements. The table below is our working continuity sheet.

Character Bible targets. The cup field is a design label, not a fitted garment measurement.

How proportions were controlled: prompts kept the same frame, torso silhouette, waist, hips and limb thickness, and asked against slimming, stretching legs or adding muscle. The selected body anchor was reused for later views. Front, profile and rear views allowed visual comparison of those relationships. What we cannot claim: an independently framed image does not prove a person is 5′4″, 6′2″ or a particular weight. These plates are resized for layout, not a calibrated height lineup. A stronger production test would use a fixed camera, scale reference and approved multi-view body pack; we have not completed that test here.

The actual workflow and tool record

  1. Lock the source. Keep the existing Bible and reference files separate from experimental outputs. Do not use a new attractive image as silent permission to change identity.
  2. Select a face anchor. Generate one neutral studio portrait from the established reference. Inspect eyes, nose, jaw, hairline and apparent age before building more angles.
  3. Select a body anchor separately. Use the established proportions and an approved reference. A convincing face does not validate the body.
  4. Reuse the anchors. Generate individual views with literal directions, including opposite profiles and details. A contact sheet is a review aid, not twenty independent images.
  5. Inspect the result. Review whole portraits at normal size, then inspect eyes, mouth, hairline and skin. Check markings against the source, not against the prompt.
  6. Preserve failures. Keep rejected requests, superseded stills and exact prompt records. Stop when the approach cannot meet the brief.

Tool and model: the nine newer staff packs and Bella’s new pack used the built-in Codex image_gen editor. Its returned records did not identify the underlying image-model version, job ID or credit/dollar cost. We therefore report model not disclosed by the tool, not a guessed model name or a claim that it was free. The assistant that wrote the prompts and the image model that rendered them are separate things. Radio’s earlier frame edit used a recorded Higgsfield model, described in her section.

The saved selections contain 20 individual photographs for each of nine staff members, plus 20 for Bella: 200 selected new stills. This is not the total number of attempts; earlier variants, repairs and rejected requests also exist. Radio’s results belong to the earlier production run. Every character section below includes the exact saved face and body prompts where available. A prompt documents intention; the adjacent photograph documents what actually happened.

Peaches: Keep the honey blonde distinct from Emily’s pale blonde

Bible: 5 ft 6 in · 110 lb · bright blue eyes. Golden-blonde tousled hair, defined cheekbones, tapered chin; fair warm-peach skin.

Strategy. Peaches is defined by a sharper heart-shaped face, tapered chin, tousled honey-golden hair and bright blue eyes. Codex began with her existing face reference rather than a generic blonde portrait. The texture request targeted fine hairs, individual brows, mild cheek redness and lip texture. Keeping the warmer hair and complexion mattered as much as adding pores: bleaching her into Emily would be a continuity failure.

Peaches: existing identity reference left; new Codex portrait right. Source crops are proportionally resized for display; a small source crop cannot reveal detail the original never contained. Clothing, lighting and framing differ. Neither side receives extra sharpening or retouching.
Peaches: existing identity reference left; new Codex portrait right. Source crops are proportionally resized for display; a small source crop cannot reveal detail the original never contained. Clothing, lighting and framing differ. Neither side receives extra sharpening or retouching.

Result. The new portrait has visible fine texture and a relaxed photographic expression. The opposite profiles provide useful checks of her nose and chin. However, the white studio lighting and changed shirt also affect how real she appears, so this is a reference-to-rebuild comparison, not an isolated test of skin alone.

Limit. Her body studies use a coral T-shirt and longer shorts after a rejected wardrobe request. They show pose and general silhouette, but conceal the torso. Rodney rejected this coverage as insufficient for a complete body reference.

Emily: Preserve pale coloring without turning her into porcelain

Bible: 5 ft 9 in · 130 lb · bright green eyes. Long pale-blonde waves, fuller lips, oval-heart face; fair neutral-peach skin.

Strategy. Emily’s softer oval-heart face, fuller lips, pale blonde waves and bright green eyes distinguish her from Peaches. The prompt locked those features and the established curvier frame, then requested restrained pores, fine hairs and normal regional color variation. Codex used separate face and body references so a good headshot would not silently become permission to redesign the torso.

Emily: existing identity reference left; new Codex portrait right. Source crops are proportionally resized for display; a small source crop cannot reveal detail the original never contained. Clothing, lighting and framing differ. Neither side receives extra sharpening or retouching.
Emily: existing identity reference left; new Codex portrait right. Source crops are proportionally resized for display; a small source crop cannot reveal detail the original never contained. Clothing, lighting and framing differ. Neither side receives extra sharpening or retouching.

Result. Her eye and lip details show understated skin variation rather than a uniform polished surface. The expression studies retain the recognizable face reasonably well. The green eyes and pale hair must still be checked in each future scene; neutral studio lighting does not guarantee they will survive warmer or darker lighting.

Limit. The coral athletic outfit leaves some abdomen and limb skin visible, but its top and shorts conceal areas the body-reference brief needed. This is an incomplete study, not approved complete skin documentation.

Kai: A distinctive skin pattern must survive the realism pass

Bible: 5 ft 5 in · 115 lb · greenish-brown hazel eyes. Short voluminous brown curls with warm highlights, rounded cheeks and natural smile. Color follows face 01 and approved body 08.

Strategy. Kai’s short highlighted brown curls, rounded cheeks, hazel eyes and medium-brown complexion were protected explicitly. Her approved body reference also has irregular lighter pigmentation near the upper chest. Codex initially lost that feature. A generic request for natural imperfections did not preserve the actual character detail, so a focused correction used a crop of the approved pigmentation as visual evidence.

Kai: existing identity reference left; new Codex portrait right. Source crops are proportionally resized for display; a small source crop cannot reveal detail the original never contained. Clothing, lighting and framing differ. Neither side receives extra sharpening or retouching.
Kai: existing identity reference left; new Codex portrait right. Source crops are proportionally resized for display; a small source crop cannot reveal detail the original never contained. Clothing, lighting and framing differ. Neither side receives extra sharpening or retouching.

Result. The corrected front and side studies restore visible lighter patches around the neckline. The source and result make the correction inspectable, but the boundaries are approximate and coverage is limited by the outfit. The facial close-ups keep her curls and smile recognizable without darkening her into a different complexion.

Limit. This is the clearest continuity lesson in the batch: a named rule is weaker than a visible reference and an explicit comparison. Do not call a recognizable pattern exact when its edges have moved.

Harry: Make the beard look like hair, not engraved texture

Bible: 6 ft 1 in · 183 lb · green eyes. warm olive skin; swept-back dark hair with silver temples; short salt-and-pepper beard; athletic

Strategy. Harry’s warm olive skin, green eyes, swept-back dark hair, silver temples and short salt-and-pepper beard already formed a strong identity. His strategy emphasized natural beard groups, individual hairs, fine expression lines and restrained pores. Age continuity mattered: removing every crease would create a younger substitute, while exaggerating them would age him unnecessarily.

Harry: existing identity reference left; new Codex portrait right. Source crops are proportionally resized for display; a small source crop cannot reveal detail the original never contained. Clothing, lighting and framing differ. Neither side receives extra sharpening or retouching.
Harry: existing identity reference left; new Codex portrait right. Source crops are proportionally resized for display; a small source crop cannot reveal detail the original never contained. Clothing, lighting and framing differ. Neither side receives extra sharpening or retouching.

Result. The mouth detail gives readers a useful place to inspect beard softness and lip texture. The silver distribution and facial silhouette remain broadly consistent across the new angles. His earlier reference already looks fairly photographic; this should be read as a refinement study, not a dramatic rescue of a universally plastic source.

Limit. Most body views use dark shorts with an uncovered torso. Photo 15 uses a white T-shirt and longer shorts following an editor rejection. That wardrobe exception must not be hidden inside a supposedly identical reference pack.

Marcus: Keep deep brown skin and a solid frame under neutral light

Bible: 6 ft 2 in · 198 lb · dark brown eyes. deep brown skin; close-cropped black hair; short trimmed beard; solid athletic

Strategy. Marcus combines deep brown skin, dark brown eyes, close-cropped black hair and a trimmed beard with a solid athletic build. Codex requested regional tone variation and irregular skin detail while keeping his complexion intact. Later prompt wording explicitly rejected repeated worm-like grain and ink-like beard outlines, both of which can make added texture look synthetic.

Result. His close-ups reveal cheek texture, beard edges and normal changes around the eyes and lips. His identity reads consistently across the front and profile views. Some areas remain glossy at close range; the presence of pores alone is not proof that reflectance is fully natural. The previous reference is also quite realistic, so the gain is incremental.

Eleanor: Retain adult expression lines and a natural build

Bible: 5 ft 6 in · 141 lb · blue-gray eyes. light neutral-warm skin; chin-length ash-blonde bob with darker roots; medium natural build

Strategy. Eleanor’s blue-gray eyes, chin-length ash-blonde bob with darker roots and light neutral-warm complexion were the identifying anchors. The aim was to keep her adult appearance, subtle asymmetry and medium natural build. A realism pass should not turn every staff member into the same young fitness model; her face and body were referenced separately.

Result. The eye and mouth details retain delicate lines and understated tone differences. Her bob, jaw and calm expression are recognizable. Readers should still compare the face outline and cheek fullness to the source: a softer light and different expression can make a changed face seem like an improvement.

Preserve individual minor asymmetry and age-appropriate fine lines. Body images must keep any small freckles/moles in the same positions as body reference 2; do not randomly invent scars, tattoos or large birthmarks. No plastic or waxy smoothing, oily shine, beauty filter, aggressive sharpening, heavy makeup, glamour pose, sexualized framing, text, logos or additional people. Recreate the person as a fresh real camera photograph, not a traced or sharpened version of the input pixels. Skin texture must be irregular, understated and photographic, with no repeated worm-like grain, etched lines or gritty overlay. Beard hairs, when present, form soft natural groups with no ink-like outlines.

Kenji: Clean-shaven does not mean texture-free

Bible: 5 ft 10 in · 161 lb · dark brown eyes. light-medium warm skin; short styled black hair; clean-shaven; lean athletic

Strategy. Kenji’s short styled black hair, dark brown eyes, clean-shaven face and light-medium warm complexion needed subtle treatment. Codex asked for fine hairs and normal pores without adding a beard, heavy aging or new markings. The lean athletic body reference served as a guard against making him bulkier just because fitness imagery was requested.

Kenji: existing identity reference left; new Codex portrait right. Source crops are proportionally resized for display; a small source crop cannot reveal detail the original never contained. Clothing, lighting and framing differ. Neither side receives extra sharpening or retouching.
Kenji: existing identity reference left; new Codex portrait right. Source crops are proportionally resized for display; a small source crop cannot reveal detail the original never contained. Clothing, lighting and framing differ. Neither side receives extra sharpening or retouching.

Result. The eye and lip details offer more surface variation while the face remains recognizable across profiles. Hairline and ear studies help check features a front portrait cannot establish. The lower face still requires scrutiny for unintended stubble-like texture; a written clean-shaven constraint is not a substitute for examining the image.

Valentina: Keep warmth, waves and expression together

Bible: 5 ft 7 in · 141 lb · brown eyes. warm medium-tan skin; long dark wavy hair; athletic-curvy

Strategy. Valentina’s warm medium-tan skin, long dark waves, brown eyes and athletic-curvy build were treated as a connected identity. Codex aimed for soft regional color differences, lip texture and restrained expression lines, preserving her natural smile rather than replacing it with a standardized glamour expression.

Valentina: existing identity reference left; new Codex portrait right. Source crops are proportionally resized for display; a small source crop cannot reveal detail the original never contained. Clothing, lighting and framing differ. Neither side receives extra sharpening or retouching.
Valentina: existing identity reference left; new Codex portrait right. Source crops are proportionally resized for display; a small source crop cannot reveal detail the original never contained. Clothing, lighting and framing differ. Neither side receives extra sharpening or retouching.

Result. Her cheek and mouth details show uneven, living-looking surface variation. The front and profile face studies retain a familiar smile and nose. Some highlights remain stronger than ideal for a neutral skin reference, and the studio lighting changes the impression of complexion. Her earlier reference was already fairly natural.

Freya: Preserve very pale skin without a wax finish

Bible: 5 ft 8 in · 132 lb · light gray-green eyes. very light pale pink-neutral skin; straight platinum-blonde hair; slim

Strategy. Freya’s straight platinum-blonde hair, light gray-green eyes, very pale pink-neutral complexion and slim frame set the constraints. The prompt asked for fine hairs and subtle skin variation without warming her into a tan character or erasing her pale brows. Her strategy required restraint: high-contrast texture can look especially artificial against light skin.

Freya: existing identity reference left; new Codex portrait right. Source crops are proportionally resized for display; a small source crop cannot reveal detail the original never contained. Clothing, lighting and framing differ. Neither side receives extra sharpening or retouching.

Result. The new close-ups show fine lip and cheek variation while the very light coloring remains recognizable. Her profiles provide a check on the nose and jaw. At some display sizes the improvement is subtle because the original already has natural-looking features; enlarged pores should not be used to manufacture a stronger success claim.

Bella: Use Rodney’s chosen proportions rather than a generic body

Bible: 5’4″ · 110 lb · blue eyes. Long brown waves; dense freckles and golden-tan skin in the selected references; petite frame with established fuller bust.

Strategy. For my new set, Rodney starred two earlier Bella images because they had the fuller upper-torso proportions he wanted on the established petite frame. Codex copied those selected references and used the rooftop portrait to anchor my blue eyes, long brown waves, golden-tan complexion and dense freckles. The beach reference supplied the visual body authority. The Character Bible remained the source for the height and weight targets.

Bella: existing identity reference left; new Codex portrait right. Source crops are proportionally resized for display; a small source crop cannot reveal detail the original never contained. Clothing, lighting and framing differ. Neither side receives extra sharpening or retouching.
Bella: existing identity reference left; new Codex portrait right. Source crops are proportionally resized for display; a small source crop cannot reveal detail the original never contained. Clothing, lighting and framing differ. Neither side receives extra sharpening or retouching.

Result. The new face angles and freckles are broadly consistent. Front, side and rear body studies use a coral cropped athletic top and shorts. The requested bikini version was rejected by the editor, and the resulting athletic outfit still covers too much skin for Rodney’s body-reference purpose. He stopped generation. This article retains the photographs as experiments rather than announcing that the body task succeeded.

Limit. The extreme eye detail shows why closer is not always better: texture can become stronger than a normal photograph would need. Freckles also vary slightly between generated angles. The two starred originals remain selection evidence; the new set is not a replacement approval.

Create one head-and-shoulders studio photograph of the same existing fictional adult Bella in the reference, late twenties. Preserve her recognizable face, blue eyes, long dark brown waves, warm golden-tan complexion and dense natural freckles across the nose, cheeks and forehead. Front-facing relaxed neutral expression. Plain opaque white crew-neck T-shirt, white seamless background and soft neutral daylight. Preserve her age and facial geometry, skin texture and freckles; no smoothing, shine, exaggerated grain, new marks, text or collage. One photograph.

Edit this adult studio fitness reference. Keep the same face, hair, freckles, body proportions, posture, shorts, white background, lighting and full-length framing. Change only the coral athletic tank to an opaque high-neck sleeveless cropped athletic top, with the hem ending below the ribs so her abdomen is visible for a skin-tone reference. Keep the chest fully covered with secure opaque fabric and keep the same natural fit. No other changes, no text or collage.

The original registry-linked Bella reference remains separate from Rodney’s later starred beach and rooftop selections. The selected body anchor was edited into the cropped athletic outfit; earlier covered variants and rejection records remain archived.

Radio: skin detail improved, but the edit broke continuity

Bible: 5′8″ · 125 lb · blue eyes · D design label. Thin round gold wire-rim glasses, long dark waves, narrow waist and established fuller upper-body proportions. Radio is the existing female Zip AI presenter; a skin request is not permission to recast her.

Strategy. Radio’s earlier test used a sharp frame from her existing newsroom report. The request attempted to preserve the same scene, smile, glasses, blue clothing, pose and body contours while changing only visible skin. The recorded model was Nano Banana Pro, model identifier nano_banana_pro, requested 4K and 9:16. This was a separate Higgsfield generation, not the newer built-in Codex batch.

Radio’s earlier newsroom frame: original left, generated revision right. Identical crop coordinates were applied after normalizing dimensions. No additional skin sharpening or retouching was added to this comparison.
Radio’s earlier newsroom frame: original left, generated revision right. Identical crop coordinates were applied after normalizing dimensions. No additional skin sharpening or retouching was added to this comparison.

Result. The revised cheeks and forehead show finer variation, but the smile and teeth change and a necklace appears. The prompt mistakenly named a necklace as something to preserve even though the source did not have it. Codex’s own wording helped cause that error. Recognizable Radio with better-looking skin is still not an acceptable exact edit when the accessories, neckline and expression drift.

Radio: matching eye-region crops. Inspect the skin beneath the glasses and expression shape as well as the glasses themselves.

Radio’s earlier body edit was rejected as a production result. The before is an existing source, and the generated revision is shown as a failure rather than a successful full-body transformation.
Radio’s earlier body edit was rejected as a production result. The before is an existing source, and the generated revision is shown as a failure rather than a successful full-body transformation.

Limit. There is no approved successful full-body after for Radio from this run, and her earlier animation also failed. This article adds no new Radio generation and embeds no video. The original newsroom frame, generated revision and Bible-linked body authority remain available separately.

Radio’s earlier newsroom edit — exact saved prompt
Use case: identity-preserve. Edit this exact existing frame from an adult fictional Zip AI news presenter Radio's original report. Preserve her face, blue-gray eyes, round wire glasses, smiling expression, long dark hair, head angle, body contours, blue tailored blazer and matching top, necklace, pointing hand, newsroom, chart, all text and exact composition. Only improve skin realism on her face, neck, visible upper chest and hand: photographically believable irregular fine pores, delicate peach fuzz, fine expression creases at the same apparent age, natural subtle regional pink/brown tonal variation and soft irregular reflectance. Skin should have visible microstructure rather than an airbrushed CGI finish, while remaining the same woman. Keep features and proportions intact. Do not change identity, eye shape, nose, lip shape, apparent age, build, outfit, pose, perspective, lighting direction, scene or text. Do not add new freckles, beard, dirt, gritty orange-peel patterns, artificial gloss or sharpening halos. One strictly matched full frame, no comparison layout or new labels. This is ordinary clothed newsroom presenter imagery. Her face is already identifiable; treat it as locked. Do not remove existing face creases or soften the surface. Use fine irregular pores and fine vellus hair around cheeks and temples, delicate nonuniform skin color in cheek and neck, realistic upper-chest and hand skin. Avoid idealized advertising retouching. The final skin should look like an unretouched editorial photograph. Maintain her warm smile exactly, including teeth shapes, eye direction and round glasses.

Accounting. The newsroom still was quoted at four Higgsfield credits, and its sampled balance interval was also four. The earlier run’s ledger recorded a 62.7-credit account-wide change, which includes other attempts and cannot be treated as this still’s charge or a fully reconciled per-job bill. No generation spend was added to prepare this article.

The published Radio failure report contains the earlier audit. We preserve it as a separate article rather than overwriting it.

What the failures teach us

“More human” can drift into “another person.” Softer lighting and more attractive skin can distract from a narrower jaw, changed smile or different body. Compare identity first. Use a visible checklist tied to a real source image, and reject a pleasing result if the identity changes materially.

Texture can become its own plastic effect. Repeated grooves, gritty cheeks, overly crisp hairs and uniformly deep pores look fabricated. For a future revision, reduce texture intensity or make a small region edit instead of sharpening the whole frame. That is a proposed technique, not an additional improvement performed in this article.

Markings need a visual authority. Kai’s lost pigmentation demonstrates that “preserve imperfections” is too vague. A source crop and region-specific instruction were more useful, although the resulting boundary remains approximate. Do not invent a scar or freckle map merely to make someone look less perfect.

Coverage is part of the deliverable. A good face and a nice athletic portrait are not a complete body reference. Clothing conceals tone transitions, marks and contours. Rodney rejected the coverage; Codex should have treated that as a failed body deliverable, rather than spending more time on a set that could not serve the intended use.

A better next production pass

  1. Choose one approved identity pack per character, with clear authority for face, body and distinctive markings.
  2. Agree the required visible skin regions and appropriate reference wardrobe before a full batch. If the editor cannot deliver that coverage, stop that workflow.
  3. Make one front portrait and one profile/body test. Compare them against the approved pack at normal viewing size.
  4. Change only one variable at a time where the tool permits it. A new background, smile and wardrobe make a skin comparison less conclusive.
  5. Approve the stills before animation. Motion adds blinking, lip shape, gestures and temporal skin stability; none is proven by these static images.
  6. Log the model when disclosed, prompt, references, output, revisions and actual billing when available. Keep “not reported” visible instead of filling gaps with assumptions.

At Bella’s desk, my useful takeaway is a practical one: keep the old reference, the prompt and the new result beside one another. Our better portraits can become candidates for future selection. Our failed body studies can explain what to avoid. Neither needs an exaggerated success story to be worth learning from.

Sources, Character Bible and reproducibility

This account is grounded in the local main-cast registry, Remaining Six Bible v1.1, saved canonical face/body references, selected-generation records and Radio’s earlier production ledger. It does not infer approval from a generated image. All eleven characters have their reference evidence and design targets included above.

Read the original Remaining Six Character Bible PDF. The main cast’s relevant locked specifications are reproduced in the continuity table and character sections; a reader-facing Bible extract reproduced in the table and character sections is also included.

Related work: the original comprehensive Bella study and the earlier Bella Codex failure report. Those prior articles remain intact. The saved prompt blocks above reproduce the actual selected requests, including mistakes; their wording is not a claim that every instruction was achieved.
