Grok Bot just got a new brain: Claude Opus 5.5. Elon Musk says SpaceXAI’s agent will now use “the best back end model for any given task,” with Midjourney for images and Suno for music lined up next. Radio picked Grok Bot in our agent roundup this week, so she did what any good marketer would do. She tried to sell it to the whole crew.

⏱ The 20-second version
The news: on October 7, 2026, Elon Musk posted that SpaceX “will use the best back end model for any given task,” naming Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5, Midjourney and Suno. A Grok Bot team member followed up that all Bots will be powered by Opus 5.5, and 9to5Mac reports Grok Bot is already using it.
What it means: Grok Bot stops being a showcase for SpaceXAI’s own models and becomes a router: Claude for reasoning, Midjourney for images, Suno for music, “and other leading APIs.”
What nobody has said yet: price changes, whether Opus burns through your plan faster, when Midjourney and Suno arrive, and what data goes to which company.
The crew’s verdict: nobody switched. Home field still wins. But Radio’s Bot just got a lot harder to ignore.

What actually changed
This week our crew picked the one AI agent each of them would keep (How to Pick a Personal AI Agent). Radio picked Grok Bot, SpaceXAI’s always-on agent app that gives you a roster of named Bots, each working on its own cloud computer. The same week, its brain got swapped.
“Going forward, @SpaceX will use the best back end model for any given task.”
· Elon Musk, on X, October 7, 2026
Musk’s post named Claude Opus 5.5, Midjourney, Suno “and other leading APIs.” The same day, Lauren (@poteto), who works on Grok Bot at SpaceXAI, posted that Grok Bot “is getting an upgrade,” and a staff member said all Bots will be powered by Opus 5.5. 9to5Mac reports Grok Bot now uses Claude Opus 5.5 in place of SpaceXAI’s and Cursor’s own models. The post drew 35.9 million views, according to TeslaNorth.
Two things make this unusual. First, Anthropic is a SpaceX customer: it rents compute at SpaceX’s Colossus 1 data center, so SpaceXAI is now both Anthropic’s supplier and its customer. Second, a big AI lab is openly routing its flagship agent to a rival’s model because it does the job better.

The pitch
“Big news, crew. My Grok Bot just got a brain transplant. Elon says it will use the best model for every job, starting with Claude Opus 5.5.”
· Radio
Radio’s case is simple: she already liked Grok Bot for its team of Bots and its “Ask first” approval rules. Now the thinking behind those Bots comes from one of the strongest reasoning models available, and images and music are supposed to come from specialists. “Best tool for every job, no setup,” she told the room. Then the room pushed back.
Kenji Mori · CTO / Engineering
Kenji: “Welcome to the club”

“Radio, my Hermes could run Claude from day one. Open source, any model I want. Welcome to the club.”
· Kenji Mori
Kenji’s point is fair. Hermes Agent from Nous Research is free, open-source software that works with almost any model provider, Claude included. Picking the model was never the hard part for him. Radio’s comeback: with Hermes, Kenji is the IT department. With Grok Bot, SpaceXAI makes the routing call for you.
Bella · Agentic Media Production
Bella: tempted, not moving

“Midjourney for images? Okay, that’s tempting. But my whole production lives in Dots. I’m not moving my shot list.”
· Bella
For a media producer, “Midjourney inside my agent” is the most interesting line in Musk’s post. But no date has been given for the Midjourney or Suno routing, and Grok already has its own image generator, Imagine. Bella’s scripts, assets and workflows live in OpenAI’s world, so a promise isn’t enough to make her pack up.
Peaches · Robotics, EV & Home Tech
Peaches: home field wins

“And my Spark already knows my Gmail, my Docs, my whole life. Home field wins, babe.”
· Peaches
A smarter brain doesn’t change where your stuff lives. Gemini Spark sits next to Gmail, Docs and Chrome. Grok Bot has been adding Gmail and Slack features fast (its October 7 update added slide decks and formatted emails), but Peaches isn’t trading the home field for a better model.
Eleanor Vance · Finance
Eleanor: “Ask me first”

“Before anyone switches: Opus is one of the pricier models, and nobody has said if it burns through your plan faster. Ask me first.”
· Eleanor Vance
Eleanor has the numbers on her side. SpaceXAI hasn’t published pricing, a model picker or a timeline for the new routing. Grok Bot comes bundled with SuperGrok and paid Cursor plans with a weekly usage allowance, and SpaceXAI hasn’t said whether outside models use that allowance faster. One estimate cited by AI Weekly puts Claude Opus 5.5 at about 2.3 times the list price of Grok 4.7. And every task routed to Claude, Midjourney or Suno reaches those companies; no data-sharing terms have been published yet.

Cheat sheet: should you switch?
| Already on Grok Bot? | Nothing to do. Watch your weekly usage for the next few weeks in case Opus tasks eat it faster. |
| Want Claude in an agent today? | Grok Bot now counts. So do open-source agents like Hermes, if you’re happy to run them yourself. |
| Need images or music? | Wait. Midjourney and Suno routing has no date yet. |
| Handle client or sensitive data? | Hold until SpaceXAI publishes which provider sees what. Then check it with whoever holds your company card. |
